Tobacco Cessation for People Living with HIV

Quit4Life+ was carried out at HIV treatment centers in 16 sites located in two remote districts in Uganda and Zambia each.
In Uganda, the two districts selected are Arua located in the northern West-Nile region, and Moroto located in the northeast Karamoja region. West-Nile (Arua) is an agrarian society, whereas Karamoja region (Moroto) is mainly a nomadic society with strong social cultural ties. Uganda sites: Arua HCVI, Adumi HCIV, Omugo HCIV, River Oli HCIV, Moroto RRH, Kosiroi HCII, Nadunget HCIII/IV, and Nakaperimen HCII.
In Zambia, two districts in two provinces were selected: Mongu in the Western Province and Chipata in the Eastern Province. Mongu is in the western part and Chipata is in the eastern part of the country, both approximately 600 kms from Lusaka, the capital city. The predominant livelihood activity for the people in the Mongu study site is fishing in the flood planes of the Zambezi River, while on the other hand, people in the Chipata study sites are small scale farmers. To this extent, the two sites are different. However, Mongu (Western) and Chipata (Eastern) are similar in the sense that they are the highest two sites in Zambia in terms of HIV prevalence rates. Zambia sites: Mongu Provincial Hospital, Kaoma District Hospital, Senanga District Hospital, Sesheke General Hospital, Chipata Provincial Hospital, Katete General Hospital, Petauke District Hospital, and Lundazi General Hospital.
Study sites were also chosen for being accessible, having high tobacco use among PLWH, willing staff to take part in the study, support from the local stakeholders, and strong telecom coverages.
